- 'A Critic's Favourite Books of 2007' (Washington Post, Jonathan Yardley) includes Alarcon's Lost City Radio and Vargas Llosa's The Bad Girl. "It's probably a bit more surprising that three of the four novels are set in the Spanish-speaking world and that two of these are translated from the Spanish, but though these novels have made my list strictly on merit, I'll admit to having been drawn to them in the first place for personal as well as literary reasons: I now live part of the year in Peru and am trying (at my age, it's a battle) to learn Spanish."
