TODAY'S HIGHLIGHTS:
The August 15 earthquake gets attention on opposite ends: a pair of articles in Latin America Press offer critical reviews over the aid and 'underestimating the damage' in Ica; a separate pair of articles focus on aid including a fine review of relief efforts in a Condé Nast's Traveler blog and a benefit led by belly dancers in California.

Free trade talks, particularly but not singularly with the USA, clearly are picking up steam and another incisive story in The Hill digs into back room congressional politics.

Finally, congratulations to world champion Sufia Mulanovich for winning the Rip Curl Girls Festival in Spain!

TODAY'S HIGHLIGHTS:
Quake updates continue today including reports of a 5.2 aftershock. The US Agency for International Development provides a helpful updated factsheet on the situation in Ica (see also their full 3-pp report).

Yale Daily News (Rachel Boyd and Andrew Mangino) reports that "Yale and Peru are closer than ever to resolving their long-standing dispute over artifacts from Machu Picchu, and a delegation from Peru will be arriving at Yale late next week for negotiations about the status of the objects." ('Peru Talks to Enter Key Phase')

Several notable articles are on the arts including the re-release of ¡Gózalo! Bugalú Tropical, Volume 2 which Toronto's Now Magazine says is "a stellar second installment in their amazing document of the searing Latin jazz, storming R&B and bruising boogaloo jams recorded in Peru during the 60s and 70s." CD versions of Vol 1 and Vol 2 are available online from Munster Records (Spain).

Finally, there are also several food-related items today. (Thursdays are usually devoted to restaurant reviews in the North American press.)

TODAY'S HIGHLIGHTS:
The August 15 earthquake gets updates from the United Nations and the Red Cross as well as several other public and private sources.

Among today's highlights are the Inter-American Development Bank's magazine which has several articles on the Camisea pipeline and its impact; the film Soy Andina plays well in the New York City press; and the difference is delineated between the 'Stockholm Syndrome' and the 'Lima Syndrome' in The Guardian.

As APEC gets underway in Sydney with President Garcia receiving positive press, readers may remember that Fujimori's last official duties were at the APEC meetings in Brunei in 2000 before he faxed back his resignation. On a historical note, the Associated Press reports that on this day, in 2001, "Peru's attorney-general files homicide charges against ex-President Alberto Fujimori, linking him to two massacres by paramilitary death squads in the early 1990s."

QUAKE UPDATE:
The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs released their 'Earthquake OCHA Situation Report No. 14' with government and United Nations updates. The UN's full 9-page report is also online. The International Red Cross offers their 'Earthquake Appeal, Operations Update No. 3' (it may be numbered '#2' in error) which reports through August 31 that "The Peruvian Red Cross Federation relief operation has to date assisted 8,809 families with shelter and non-food items."
